The rapid modernisation of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the commissioning of the first "Taurus" class 1016 locomotive in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also procured for alternating current operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, a total of 282 class 1116 locomotives had been put into service. They are authorised for speeds up to 230 km/h, with a power output of 6,400 kW.
In 2008, RCA acquired the freight transport division of Hungarian Railways (MÁV Cargo Rt.). Since then, Rail Cargo Hungaria has been part of the Rail Cargo Group. Locomotives 1116 001–034, as well as 048 and 049, are assigned to operations within their area of service.
